HOW WE COACH
Most of your coaching is done during the Feedback Sessions and Feedback is almost as important to your growth as the instruction!
Feedback is the time after an assignment has been turned in when we evaluate your efforts. It is always assumed you have done the best you could do with what you had to work with. Anyone who has taken more than a day's worth of photos knows that conditions don't always cooperate. We evaluate what you've chosen to turn in and go from there.
People do their best in a positive, constructive environment. There is always something to praise in a photo and there is always something that could have been done better. A train needs two rails to get where it's going. We want you to succeed beyond your own expectations, so evaluating your efforts in an encouraging way is the route we take.
Any of us on OTFYC staff, who is handling Feedback, has endured the agony of listening to an instructor's or judge's comments many times. This is a professional learning experience and it's often not fun or encouraging, but we keep going back for more. Why? Because it's the best way to grow!
In your coaching sessions, however, the emphasis is on what was done right and what else might have been done to improve it. Often a student will go, when possible, and re-do their photo according to their coach's advice and be much happier with that result.
We enjoy what we do and make sure our students do, too. Object lessons, humor, illustrations, war stories, similes, metaphors, student feedback, relevant assignments and the like, all go into making our points stick and the learning fun.
